The Witcher 4 was unveiled to the world during the Game Awards in December 2024, accompanied by a captivating trailer that introduced Ciri as the new protagonist. This announcement sparked significant discussion within the gaming community, especially given Geralt's iconic role in the previous three games.

In a follow-up interview with VGC, The Witcher 4 Narrative Director Phillipp Weber addressed the community's mixed reactions. He expressed his own fondness for playing as Geralt but assured fans that the team is committed to showcasing Ciri's potential and making her central role a rewarding experience. Weber stated, "The best thing that we can do, and I think this is really our goal, is to prove that with Ciri, we can do a lot of interesting things so we can really make it worth it because this decision to have Ciri as a protagonist wasn’t made yesterday, we started making this a very long time ago."

The Witcher 4 Executive Producer, Małgorzata Mitręga, also weighed in on the decision, expressing appreciation for the fans' passion and their varied opinions.
