Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Facing Lu Bu is no walk in the park. In my experience with Dynasty Warriors: Origins, it took over an hour to conquer this legendary warrior. However, there are compelling reasons to take him on.

Firstly, defeating Lu Bu earns you bragging rights – it's a prestigious achievement. Secondly, depending on your alliance with Shu or Wei, you might be forced to battle him during the Battle of Xiapi in Chapter 4. Lastly, triumphing over him at the Battle of Hulao Gate not only grants you the "The Strongest" trophy but also the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd, if you beat him in the post-game. These incentives make the challenge worthwhile.

Lu Bu’s First Phase

Before engaging Lu Bu, ensure you're equipped to handle his might. A weapon like a sword, capable of multiple hits and staggering him, is crucial. Opt for Battle Arts that require minimal Bravery, activate quickly, and have a wide range. My setup included Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories such as Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell, which boost health and defense, are essential due to Lu Bu's devastating attacks. Additionally, choose a weapon with a skill that rewards Bravery for Perfect Evades, as this will be key in this fight.

In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Lu Bu typically starts mounted on Red Hare. This initial phase sees him charging around the battlefield. He's swift, but he pauses occasionally, providing openings to strike with your Battle Arts before retreating. His attacks have limited AOE, except when Red Hare leaps and crashes down, making them relatively easy to dodge. Once his health drops to 80%, he dismounts, and the real battle begins.

Lu Bu’s Second Phase

On foot, Lu Bu becomes even more formidable. His speed and agility make him a whirlwind on the battlefield, often surrounded by a red aura that makes him immune to staggering. When he charges, be ready to evade, as he typically charges in sets of three. If he charges without his spear, he's attempting a grab that can severely deplete your health, but it's easily evaded like his other charges.

His most lethal move is when he glows orange, signaling an imminent barrage of three massive arrows, repeated thrice, capable of juggling and annihilating your health. This is where a ranged Battle Art like Absconding Slash proves invaluable, allowing you to interrupt his attack from a distance. Close-range arts like Palm Strike will lead to certain death. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergency invincibility, which can be a lifesaver if you misjudge a dodge or get caught in a combo.

Fortunately, Lu Bu is susceptible to juggling in this phase, enabling you to quickly charge your Battle Arts and break his Fortitude meter. Stay close to react more effectively to his attacks, and remember, evasion is key.

Lu Bu’s Final Phase

As Lu Bu's health wanes, he enters Musou Rage, marking the final phase. Now unstaggarable, he unleashes a relentless barrage of attacks. Your objective is to deplete his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Use all your remaining resources – Musou attacks, Battle Arts, and rapid strikes. If he completes his Musou Attack, he'll immediately reactivate it, forcing you to restart the phase. Breaking his Fortitude here is your ticket to victory against this formidable adversary.

And that's how you defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! The game is now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
