Deadpool and Wolverine Director's 'Star Wars' Eyeing Ryan Gosling

Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool & Wolverine, is reportedly in talks to helm a new Star Wars film, with Ryan Gosling potentially taking the lead role. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, revealing that Levy has been developing this project since 2022, with a screenplay completed last year. He's collaborating once again with Jonathan Tropper, screenwriter for This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project.

Plot details remain tightly under wraps, with no confirmation on Gosling's character or the film's temporal setting within the Star Wars timeline. However, it's confirmed to be outside the Skywalker Saga and intended as a standalone film, rather than the start of a trilogy.

Gosling's potential involvement has reportedly expedited the project. Levy was previously attached to direct a boy band movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, but THR suggests that Gosling's signing could shift Levy's focus to the Star Wars film, potentially starting production this fall.

This development comes amidst a period of transition for the Star Wars franchise. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Skeleton Crew recently concluded its run on Disney+. On the film front, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu movie completed filming in December, slated for release on May 22, 2026. A new trilogy focusing on Daisy Ridley's Rey is also in the works.

A release date for Levy's Star Wars film remains unannounced, pending the project's progression. For a comprehensive overview of upcoming Star Wars content, consult our 2025 preview.
