The game gained popularity for its witty pop culture references and charmingly illogical world-building. Set in a city where supernatural events are treated as mundane occurrences, the narrative follows a unique tone.

Players assume the role of Detective Francis McQueen, who leads the underfunded Darkside Division alongside his partner, Officer Patrick Dooley. Together, they navigate diners, city streets, and interdimensional rifts to solve bizarre cases.

While locals remain unfazed by strange occurrences in their shadows, McQueen and Dooley investigate every oddity. They interrogate supernatural phenomena and survive threats emerging from sewers or alleyways, often crossing paths with literary legends like Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft.
