Netflix Revives Cujo in New Adaptation

When it comes to recent Stephen King updates, get ready for a fresh take on a classic: a new adaptation of "Cujo" is coming, and it's poised to make a big impact.

Netflix is producing a new film based on King’s novel, Deadline reports, with Vertigo Entertainment founder and producer Roy Lee attached to produce. That said, it's still in the early stages—no writer or director is on board yet, and there’s no word on casting.

King's book was first published in 1981 and quickly made its way to the big screen. A film adaptation, directed by Lewis Teague and written by Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner, became a cult horror hit in 1983. The story centers on a devoted mother (played by Dee Wallace) who does everything she can to protect her young son from a rabid dog. Trapped in a stalled car, they battle extreme heat and a once-friendly Saint Bernard named Cujo—now a deadly threat after being bitten by a rabid bat—who relentlessly stalks them.

"Cujo" is one of many popular Stephen King tales that successfully transitioned to film, and new adaptations are keeping the momentum going. Oz Perkins’ take on King’s short story "The Monkey" arrived in February, with more to come this year—including Glen Powell in "The Running Man" and JT Mollner’s "The Long Walk," also produced by Lee and Vertigo. Plus, HBO’s "IT" prequel "Welcome to Derry" is in the works. Meanwhile, the iconic King novel "Carrie" is being developed into an eight-episode Prime Video series by horror master Mike Flanagan.

It’s a great time to be a Stephen King fan—and there’s even more exciting content on the horizon.
