To unlock The Tournament quest in *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, you'll need to speak with Gyoji, a resident of Yamato. After you've taken down several members of The Shinbakufu, Gyoji will be waiting outside your hideout, eager to discuss the tournament. This clandestine fighting arena is situated at the Ominesanji Temple in Southeastern Yamato. For easy access, synchronize with the Ominesanji Overlook viewpoint to the west of the temple, which will serve as a fast travel point. This step is highly recommended to facilitate your return visits and character switches.

Upon arriving at the Ominesanji Temple, engage with Gyoji once more. He'll brief you on the task ahead: you must triumph in four one-on-one duels before facing the ultimate champion. After the briefing cutscene, ring the bell to initiate your first battle.

How to Complete The Tournament in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

The Tournament is a gauntlet of high-stakes, life-or-death combat. Fortunately, you can take breaks between fights, so make sure to heal with rations and upgrade your weapons and armor as needed before ringing the bell to proceed to the next opponent.

To defeat each opponent, we suggest using Yasuke with a long katana, focusing on dodging and parrying to exploit their vulnerabilities. Utilize abilities like Power Dash and Payback when you have sufficient adrenaline. Knowing your opponents' weapons can also give you an edge:

  • Lady Masago wields a Naginata.
  • Lord Suguru uses a Katana.
  • Lord Hokuto battles with a Kanabo.
  • Lady O-Sen fights with dual Poison Katanas and throws ranged items.
  • Lord Unkai uses a Naginata and can heal if you keep your distance.

After defeating all opponents and completing your first tournament, speak with Gyoji again on the hilltop. He'll express gratitude for his newfound freedom and mention future tournaments. It's during this conversation that the "Test Your Might" trophy should unlock.

Best Loadout and Skills for Tournaments in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

For The Tournament, the Long Katana is your weapon of choice. Equip the highest rarity Long Katana you own and upgrade it to its maximum level at your hideout's blacksmith. Enhance it with engravings that boost Armor Damage or Armor Piercing for a significant advantage. Your armor selection is equally crucial, not only for boosting health but also for the combat-altering abilities provided by engravings.

Before entering The Tournament, ensure you've unlocked the Samurai Daimyo Armor of Legend by defeating The Ox, a Shinbakufu member. Also, acquire the Protector’s Armor from one of the Castles. The former offers a 75% damage increase at the cost of limiting your health to 25%, while the latter enables you to parry unblockable attacks. Combining these engravings into a single armor set can allow you to defeat tournament foes in under a minute, provided you parry effectively.

For skills, allocate as many Mastery points as possible into the Long Katana and Samurai skill trees. Max out Combat Expert to enhance your melee weapon damage, and unlock Power Dash and Payback to give you the upper hand in these intense duels.

*Assassin’s Creed Shadows* is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, launching on March 20th.
