Chris Evans Confirms He Won't Return as Captain America in Upcoming MCU Films

Chris Evans, renowned for his role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly denied rumors of his return in the anticipated film Avengers: Doomsday or any other MCU projects. In a candid interview with Esquire, Evans directly refuted a report by Deadline suggesting his comeback alongside fellow original Avenger, Robert Downey Jr., stating, "That's not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years, ever since Endgame. I've just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no. Happily retired."

The speculation about Evans' potential return was fueled by comments from Anthony Mackie, who succeeded Evans as Captain America in the MCU. Mackie, speaking to Esquire, mentioned hearing from his manager that Evans might reprise his role. However, Mackie clarified after speaking with Evans himself, "I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then. At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’ He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired'."

Despite his retirement from the Captain America role, Evans did make a brief return to the MCU universe, albeit in a different capacity. He reprised his role as Johnny Storm, a character he played in the earlier Fox franchise, in the film Deadpool & Wolverine. This appearance was more of a comedic side role and did not involve his iconic Captain America character.

The MCU landscape has seen significant shifts, particularly following the departure of Jonathan Majors, who portrayed Kang the Conqueror. Majors was set to be the central antagonist akin to Thanos but was removed from the franchise after being found guilty of assault and harassment. In response, Marvel has announced that Doctor Doom will be the new major villain, with Robert Downey Jr. set to portray him. This casting decision sparked further speculation about the return of original Avengers, though no official confirmations have followed.

In related news, Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his role as Doctor Strange, has confirmed he will not appear in Avengers: Doomsday but will have a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The film, directed by the Russo Brothers, is expected to delve deeper into the multiverse narrative, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also slated to appear.

As the MCU continues to evolve, fans remain eager for updates on the future of their favorite characters and the unfolding storylines. For now, Chris Evans remains steadfast in his retirement from the role of Captain America, leaving fans to wonder what other surprises the MCU has in store.
