Borderlands 4 Early Look is Terminally Ill Fan's Wish
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford personally pledged to help terminally ill Borderlands fan Caleb McAlpine experience the upcoming Borderlands 4 early.
Terminally Ill Gamer's Wish to Play Borderlands 4 Early
Gearbox CEO's Promise: Making a Fan's Dream Come True
37-year-old Caleb McAlpine, a devoted Borderlands fan battling terminal cancer, made a heartfelt request on Reddit: to play Borderlands 4 before his passing. Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in August, Caleb expressed his deep love for the series and his desire to experience the anticipated 2025 release.
McAlpine's plea resonated deeply, reaching Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford. Pitchford responded on Twitter (X), assuring Caleb that they would "do whatever we can to make something happen." He subsequently confirmed ongoing email communication with McAlpine.
Revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, Borderlands 4's 2025 release window leaves it over a year away, excluding potential delays. This timeframe, unfortunately, contrasts sharply with McAlpine's prognosis. His GoFundMe page indicates a 7-12 month life expectancy, potentially extending to two years with successful treatment.
Despite his circumstances, McAlpine maintains a positive outlook. He shared his faith and determination in a September GoFundMe update.
His GoFundMe page, aiming for $9,000, has already raised $6,210 through 128 donations, covering medical expenses and essential needs.
Gearbox's History of Supporting Fans
This isn't Gearbox's first act of kindness towards ill fans. In 2019, Trevor Eastman, a Borderlands fan fighting cancer, received an early Borderlands 3 copy. Sadly, he passed away later that year, but his memory lives on through the in-game weapon, the Trevonator.
Furthermore, in 2011, following the death of fan Michael Mamaril, Gearbox honored his friend's request by creating an NPC in Borderlands 2 named after him, providing players with valuable loot and a special achievement.
Borderlands 4's release remains some time off, but Gearbox's commitment to making the game memorable is evident. Pitchford's Business Wire press release highlighted Gearbox's ambition to improve upon the beloved Borderlands formula.
While details remain scarce, fans can add Borderlands 4 to their Steam wishlists and await further announcements.
