Gearbox CEO's Promise: Making a Fan's Dream Come True

37-year-old Caleb McAlpine, a devoted Borderlands fan battling terminal cancer, made a heartfelt request on Reddit: to play Borderlands 4 before his passing. Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in August, Caleb expressed his deep love for the series and his desire to experience the anticipated 2025 release.

McAlpine's plea resonated deeply, reaching Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford. Pitchford responded on Twitter (X), assuring Caleb that they would "do whatever we can to make something happen." He subsequently confirmed ongoing email communication with McAlpine.

This timeframe, unfortunately, contrasts sharply with McAlpine's prognosis. His GoFundMe page indicates a 7-12 month life expectancy, potentially extending to two years with successful treatment.

Despite his circumstances, McAlpine maintains a positive outlook. He shared his faith and determination in a September GoFundMe update.

His GoFundMe page, aiming for $9,000, has already raised $6,210 through 128 donations, covering medical expenses and essential needs.

Gearbox's History of Supporting Fans

Borderlands 4 Early Access for Dying FanThis isn't Gearbox's first act of kindness towards ill fans. In 2019, Trevor Eastman, a Borderlands fan fighting cancer, received an early Borderlands 3 copy. Sadly, he passed away later that year, but his memory lives on through the in-game weapon, the Trevonator.

Borderlands 4's release remains some time off, but Gearbox's commitment to making the game memorable is evident. Pitchford's Business Wire press release highlighted Gearbox's ambition to improve upon the beloved Borderlands formula.

While details remain scarce, fans can add Borderlands 4 to their Steam wishlists and await further announcements.
