BG3's Patch 7 Brings In Over A Million Mods Shortly After Rollout
Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!
Larian Studios' highly anticipated Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 has unleashed a flood of community-created mods. The response has been phenomenal.
Over a Million Mods Installed in Under 24 Hours
Larian CEO Swen Vincke announced on X (formerly Twitter) that over one million mods were installed within the first day of Patch 7's release on September 5th. This figure was quickly surpassed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over 3 million installs and counting. "Modding is pretty big," Vincke stated.
Patch 7's impact stems from several key additions: new evil endings, improved split-screen, and Larian's own integrated Mod Manager. This in-game tool simplifies browsing, installing, and managing mods.
The existing modding tools, accessible via Steam, empower creators using Larian's Osiris scripting language. Modders can incorporate custom scripts, debug their creations, and publish directly from the toolkit.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon
PC Gamer highlighted a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) that expands modding capabilities, including a level editor and reactivated features previously restricted by Larian. While Larian initially limited access to its development tools, stating they are "a game development company, not a tools company," the community's enthusiasm is driving further development.
Larian is actively developing cross-platform modding support, a significant undertaking given the need for compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed a PC-first rollout, followed by console support after addressing potential issues.
Beyond modding, Patch 7 boasts UI enhancements, animations, dialogue options, bug fixes, and performance improvements. With further updates planned, Larian's commitment to modding and player engagement is clear. The future of Baldur's Gate 3 modding looks incredibly bright.
