Amazon to shutter its app store on Android after more than ten years on mobile
Amazon's Android Appstore to Close its Doors
Fans of Amazon's Android Appstore will soon be saying goodbye. TechCrunch reports that Amazon has notified developers of the store's closure on August 20th, 2024. This marks the end of a service that launched back in 2011.
While the Appstore's longevity is notable, the news is undoubtedly disappointing for developers and users alike. Amazon's support page clarifies that existing Android apps installed from the store are not guaranteed continued updates or support. However, the Appstore will remain operational on Amazon's Fire TV and Fire Tablets.
The Curious Timing of Closure
The closure is particularly interesting given the recent rise in popularity of alternative app stores. Amazon's lack of a strong market presence in this space likely contributed to the decision. Unlike competitors offering incentives like free games (such as the Epic Games Store), Amazon's Appstore lacked compelling features to attract users.
This serves as a reminder that even large corporations can't guarantee the permanence of their services.
