Mar 26,25

While Magic: The Gathering's high-profile collaborations with universes like Final Fantasy and Spider-Man have been turning heads, the next expansion on the horizon, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, promises to bring the focus back to the game's own rich universe. Scheduled to launch next month, this set revisits the iconic plane of Tarkir, and we're thrilled to offer an exclusive sneak peek at five cards that are poised to dominate the draft scene. You can already secure your copy by preordering on Amazon.

Dive into the gallery below to explore these five exciting new cards, and continue reading for insights from the Wizards of the Coast team on their design philosophy and the overarching vision for the set.

Magic: The Gathering - 5 New Cards from Tarkir: Dragonstorm

6 ImagesThese five cards form a cohesive "cycle," each belonging to one of Magic's colors and sharing a common design ethos. They are all low-cost, common-rarity creatures that not only offer an ability linked to one of Tarkir’s three-color clans but also enable you to convert mana into a color associated with that clan.

Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak elaborates, "Three-color limited environments require ample mana fixing at all rarities. We designed these creatures to not only contribute to the board state but also to help with mana development. Unlike tapped lands, which only produce mana and often put you at a disadvantage, these creatures allow you to progress your game plan while fixing your mana."

Senior Worldbuilding Designer Lauren Bond explains that the mechanical design of this cycle came first, yet common cards often serve as a canvas to depict the set's world. "These cards highlight the unique aspects of each clan since their last appearance," she says. "From the action-oriented Jeskai monks to the Temur magic wielders, the protective and vengeful Sultai Nagas, the diverse Mardu military, and the Abzan clerics nurturing the regrowth of their kin trees."

Recent Magic sets have faced critique for leaning too heavily on thematic gimmicks, even during revisits to established planes. Tarkir: Dragonstorm, however, offers a refreshing return to form. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the importance of such feedback to Wizards of the Coast, stating, "The core concept for Tarkir was set long before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and subsequent sets. Our goal was to blend Dragons and Clans in a novel way, with Dragonstorms as a central feature. Lauren and I were committed from the start to authentically expand the story of this beloved plane."

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is available for preorder now, with its official release slated for both physical and digital formats on April 11, and in-store prerelease events starting April 4.
