The 10 Best PlayStation 1 Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Jan 27,25

This concludes my retrospective series on retro game eShop selections. The supply of retro consoles with diverse game libraries is dwindling, but I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, cultivating a legendary game library that continues to see re-releases. While these titles initially challenged Nintendo's dominance, they're now enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites, presented without ranking.

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa, a deserving yet underappreciated gem, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Players control a charming floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a perilous threat. The game boasts vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both titles are essential as a pair.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the Western RPG market, becoming Square Enix's most successful game and propelling the PlayStation to the forefront. While a remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise, launching it onto a much larger stage. Though later entries became more eccentric, the original game remains a standout, offering a thrilling, action-packed experience reminiscent of G.I. Joe, rather than Kojima's later philosophical explorations. Its enjoyable gameplay is a key factor in its success. The PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series into 3D. While the polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, they possess a unique charm. The game's vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and inventive boss designs make it a compelling shooter.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

To avoid overwhelming the list with Square Enix titles, I've included only this and Final Fantasy VII. Chrono Cross, while unable to fully replicate the success of its predecessor, Chrono Trigger, stands as a clever and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters. Its soundtrack is also legendary.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While personally fond of most Mega Man games, objectivity suggests recommending only a few to newcomers. In the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 stand out for their superior design. X4 offers a rare moment of balance before the series veered off course. The Legacy Collections allow players to judge for themselves.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with polished action. Created by the mind behind Ghosts ‘n Goblins, it initially appears simple but presents a significant challenge. Its rediscovery is welcome.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port of Grandia forms the basis of this HD release. Developed by many of the Lunar team, Grandia offers a bright and cheerful adventure, contrasting with the prevalent Evangelion-influenced RPGs of its time. Its robust combat system builds upon Game Arts' previous work.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft's PlayStation adventures varied in quality. The original Tomb Raider arguably excels with its focus on tomb raiding over action. This compilation allows players to experience the first three games and form their own opinions.

moon ($18.99)

moon, initially a Japan-only release, deconstructs the traditional RPG, offering a more adventure-game-like experience. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach and unique message are noteworthy.

This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch in the comments below! Thank you for reading.
