Digital Revolutionizing Devarattam: A Mobile App Tribute
This application, developed as part of my "Digital Revolution of Devarattam" project, honors the legacy of Devarattam.
Kalaimamani M. Kumararaman (retired teacher), Kalaimani M. Kannan Kumar, and Kalaimani K. Nellai Manikandan—all from Zamin Kodangipatti—have been recognized with prestigious awards: Kalaimani, Kalaimani, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, respectively, for their contributions to Devarattam. This app is dedicated to these legends, my mentor E. Rajakamulu, and the cherished figures of the Devarattam tradition.
The primary aim of the Devarattam app is to promote the art form and its distinguished awardees. The app features detailed information on Devarattam and its notable practitioners.
Devarattam, a traditional Tamil Nadu folk dance, boasts a rich history. Both historically and in the present day, it's performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community. While the dance encompasses 32 to 72 steps, the core comprises 32 fundamental movements, with variations built upon this foundation.
Devarattam dancers gracefully execute the steps, each holding a kerchief and adorned with salangai (ankle bells). The rhythmic accompaniment is provided by the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional musical instrument.
